Dhamtari district is a district of Chhattisgarh. It was officially formed on July 6, 1998. Dhamtari is abbreviated from "Dhamma"+"Tarai" District is situated in the fertile plains of Chhattisgarh Region. This District is situated between 20042' N Latitude and 81o33' Longtitude. Dhamtari district is officially formed on 6th July 1998 dividing the Raipur district currently the capital of Chhattisgarh along with Mahasamund . As a result the boundaries of the Raipur district is converted into the districts e.g Raipur, Mahasamund and Dhamtari. Dhamtari, Kurud and Nagari are included in Dhamtari district as Tehsils and Dhamtari, Kurud, Nagari and Magarlod are included as blocks. The district headquarter is itself Dhamtari. The total area of the district is 2029 Sq.Km. and 305 Meter above the sea.The District is surrounded by District Raipur in North & South, part of Orissa state in East & West.
The district has a population of 719,065 (2001 census), of which 476,945 (66%) are tribal peoples. The district is divided into four tehsils, Bhopalapattanam, Bijapur, Dantewada, and Konta.
Dhamtari is situated in the fertile plains, irrigated by the Mahanadi river and Sendur, Pairy, Sondur, Joan, Kharun and Shivnath - its tributaries. Paddy is the main crop grown here. The Satpura range of mountains, popularly known as Sihawa Pahad, is to the east, Kanker is to the west, state capital Raipur to the north, and the state of Orissa to the south.
Dhamtari has a number of dams. Asia's first ever Syphen dam was built in the year 1914 at Madamsilli. Ravishankar Sagar dam, which irrigates almost 57,000 hectares of land and is the main supply of water to the Bhilai Steel Plant and Raipur, is here. Sondhur dam and Dudhawa dam are other major dams.
