FDA seals drug unit in Raipur

The durg controlling authority in Chhattisgarh on Thursday raided and sealed a unit of an antibiotic manufacturing company here, whose product was used in sterilisation camps in Bilaspur district where 13 women died and several others fell ill.


"A raid was conducted at the drug manufacturing unit of Mahawar Pharma Pvt Ltd on Thursday morning and after collecting samples of medicines from there it was sealed," Food and Drug Administration Controller Ravi Prakash Gupta told PTI.


During the raid, a significant quantity of drugs were found burnt at the premises of Mahawar Pharma and a detailed report in this connection will be given to higher authorities, official sources in the drugs control department said.


Notably, state government has already suspended the sale of six drugs used in tubectomy surgeries at separate government-organised sterilisation camps in Bilaspur district which claimed the lives of 13 women and left nearly 100 ill.


Govt accepts moral responsibility


Raman Singh Government on Thursday announced a judicial probe into the incidents. Cabinet also sacked two medical officers including the in-charge Chief Medical Officer Bilaspur Dr RK Bhange and District Civil Surgeon Dr RK Gupta who performed operations. Talking to media persons after the emergency meeting of State Cabinet held on Thursday evening, the Cabinet Minister for Panchayat & Rural Development Ajay Chandrakar said that a judicial investigation will be conducted in the incident, for which the point of investigation would be declared soon. Claiming all possible best medical facilities being arranged to provide relief to the affected women, he further stated that 30 experts Doctors have been called for further treatment whereas special arrangements like Dialysis (22), Ventilator (34) as well as CRRT machines too have been air-lifted to Bilaspur to provide treatment to the ailing women after the operations. Accepting moral responsibility of state government, he said that government is committed to reinstate confidence of people on government and added that adequate arrangements would be made to ensure such incidents does not occur in future. He further added that those who will be found guilty for it will not be spared whether its medicines manufacturer, distributor and doctors. Strict action will be taken against them, he added.
